1. Not meeting with the power-person
Do not waste time—yours or theirs—enthusiastically selling the receptionist on your cleaning service.
The receptionist is likely to be the gateway person. They may greet you and listen as if they care, but that doesn’t guarantee they will pass on your business card to the boss.
Be friendly, courteous, and professional whenever you meet with the gateway person.
However, your task is to quickly find the power-person. The one who makes the hiring decisions.
This may or may not be the person at the front desk.
When you discover who it is, either make an appointment to meet, or talk with them as soon as can be arranged.
2. Describing another customer or their office
It’s a good idea to bring a list of your other satisfied customers. You will be asked to supply references, so have them handy on your first meeting.
However, don’t give a detailed account of your work in another business.
Because you might give out information that your customer wants to keep private.
And that’s just not good business practice.
3. Talking about yourself
Have you ever met a Me-monster?
You know, that person who can never get enough about themselves?
They talk about their achievements. And their material wealth. And their success.
Ho-hum. Who cares?
Am I right?
All you have to do is extend a friendly handshake. Introduce yourself, and tell them about your office cleaning service.
Follow this guide. In just a few words, tell them:
WHO you are
WHAT you do
WHERE your service is located
WHEN are you available
WHY you enjoy your cleaning service
The key is to be genuinely interested in them. Show that you care.
Ask a few questions about their cleaning needs—such as how frequently do they hire a service.
Refer them to your cleaning business website for further details about you and your cleaning service.
This is why it’s important to maintain an updated, professional website. It’s doing your marketing for you!
Your website is a big part of establishing and maintaining your relationships with new customers.
4. Telling about an office-cleaning disaster
Have you ever met someone for the first time that launched into a story about some personal disaster?
And how did that make you feel?
That’s what I thought—awkward!!
Because you didn’t know them well enough to hear about that.
Some people are prone to talking more when nervous.
Take a nice deep breath. Smile and relax. Don’t talk about your jobs.
Especially don’t talk about a job that went awry, like that time you accidentally let the office cat out at night, only to find out that it was a show cat worth thousands!
Believe me. They don’t want to know.
Be yourself and be friendly.
They don’t need to hear your stories. They only care to know about your cleaning service.
Listen, if they’re willing to give you two minutes to learn about your service, chances are good they have already decided to try it out.
So tell them how your cleaning service can benefit them more than their current or past service.
5. Dressing like a janitor
Meeting the manager you want to make a good impression.
Don’t dress like a cleaning person, even if you are off to a cleaning job as soon as your meeting ends. Change in the car if you must!
Just remember: Dress in business casual for your first meeting.
Tattoos and visible belly rings are perfectly acceptable in some circles, and not in others.
Are they deemed okay by your target market? I don’t know the answer to that.
It’s up to you to find out.
Just remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
